Nan Austin Chandler passed away at Belle Meade Saturday, March 1, 2013.

A memorial service will be held in the Chapel at Belle Meade, 100 Waters Drive, Friday,

March 7 at 2 p.m. with a reception following.

 

Born Nan Roberta Brockwell on April 10, 1920 to the late James and Mary King Brockwell of Petersburg, Va., Mrs. Chandler graduated from Needham Broughton High School, Raleigh, NC in 1937 and Harbougher College, Raleigh, in 1939. Soon after graduation she met Moore County native, E.J. Austin, and moved to Southern Pines when they married in 1941. After the death of her husband she married Moore County native Ralph Leland Chandler in 1988.

 

Throughout her life Mrs. Chandler was a strong supporter of the cultural and educational growth of the area. She was the lead facilitator of the Girl Scout day camp held at Camp Gertrude Tufts and Foxfire. She chaired many committees of the Southern Pines Garden Council during her 24 year membership. She supervised the hostesses for the Moore County Historical Association at the Shaw House, supported the Arts Council of Moore County and was a charter member of the John Boyd VFW Auxiliary.

 

Her survivors include five daughters, Roberta J. Imhoff and husband Rod of Williamston, MI, Alyce C. Zink and husband Fred of New Bern, Susan I. Austin-Salvo and husband Anthony of Coatesville, PA, Nancy Austin Snyder and husband Kurt of Hope Mills, and Candace Austin Harms and husband Jeff of Foxfire Village, one sister, Barbara Smith and husband Bill of Raleigh, ten grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
