Peggy Ann Yates

Peggy Ann Yates, 87, of Pinehurst, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, July 5, 2026.

She was born on April 19, 1939, in Rockingham, North Carolina, to Claude and Edna Garret Yates. She was the youngest of their four children. Her brother Jack was 12 years old when she was born, her sister Margie was 10, and her sister Joyce was 6.

After graduating from Rockingham High School in 1957, Peggy attended Mercy Sacred Heart School of Nursing in Charlotte, North Carolina. After receiving her degree in 1960, she and one of her roommates, Kate Holder, began their careers as Public Health Nurses in Charleston, South Carolina. In the early 1970s, they both relocated to Savannah, Georgia, where Peggy became the Director of Savannah’s Family Planning Program, and Kate went on to become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner.

Neither woman ever married, and they remained lifelong friends and companions. To their nieces and nephews, Peggy and Kate were the epitome of glamorous career women. Their passion was traveling, and over the years, they explored destinations all over the world. After their retirement, the girls decided that they wanted to retire back home in North Carolina, where they spent many happy years in Pinehurst.
In addition to her parents and her siblings, Peggy was preceded in death by nieces Karen Britt and Claudia Britt.

Peggy is survived by Kate Holder of Pinehurst. She is also survived by nephews, Sam Yates of Rockingham, NC, and Tony Yates of Ellerbe, NC; and by nieces, Mona Britt Shumake of Satellite Beach, FL, Mandy Britt Owen of Dothan, AL, and Jane Britt Hilliard of Cocoa, FL.

A memorial service will be planned at a later date.
