Rena Louvenia Denny Overby, 95, of Carthage, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2024, at Westfield Nursing and Rehabilitation.

Rena was born on December 22, 1928, to the late Hilton and Essie Key Denny in Surry County.  She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  Rena was fascinated with genealogy, especially her family lineage.  She enjoyed tending to her flowers, gardening, knitting, crafts, cooking, sewing, and reading her Bible.

Rena is survived by her two daughters, Phyllis Kottcamp, of Sanford and Linda King, and her husband, Tom, of Coats, North Carolina; two sons, David Overby, of Carthage and Tommy Overby, and his wife, Julia, of Sanford; three sisters, Polly Holder, of Vass, Sylvia Gaines, and Jackie Lankford, both of Sanford; two grandchildren, Tiffany Marie Lamb and Angelina Kottcamp Leach; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Mallie Overby, who passed away in 1999; a cherished grandchild, William Henry “Little Billy” Kottcamp, V; brother, David Denny and sister, Ann King.

Funeral services will be held at Red Branch Baptist Church Sunday, December 1, 2024, at 3:00 p.m.  A graveside service will follow at the Red Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will be gathering prior to the service from 2:00 p.m. until service time in the sanctuary of the church.

In lieu of flowers please donate to Liberty Hospice of Lee County.

Services for Mrs. Overby have been entrusted to Fry & Prickett Funeral Home.

  1. I am so sorry to hear of my cousin Rena’s death. She was an amazing person who was good at so many things. We’ll always remember her for her kind sprit and generosity, and for the amazing desserts she brought to family gatherings.
