Ruth Harriss Tyson, age 101, of Penick Village, died February 12, 2025 after a short illness.  She was born on August 3, 1923 to Ruth Harriss Tyson and Lucien Person Tyson in Carthage, NC.  She was educated in the Carthage school system and graduated in 1945 from Woman’s College (now UNC-G) with a B.S. in Music.

Miss Tyson’s career in education began in Raleigh, NC where she taught countless elementary school children; first as a music instructor, then as an elementary school teacher and finally as a principal.  She believed in the importance of a good education and enjoyed the teaching profession.

Music played an important role throughout her life and brought her great pleasure.  Miss Tyson was able to play the piano “by ear”.  She also loved animals, especially dogs, who provided her much joy.  Gourmet cooking was also a focus of hers and she was a faithful follower of Julia Child and her recipes.  Throughout her life, she had a keen interest in history, especially that of Moore County. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Upon her retirement from teaching, Miss Tyson returned to Carthage as the caregiver for her mother until her death in 1990.  Shortly thereafter, she moved to Penick Village.

She was predeceased in death by both of her parents and her sister, Jane Tyson Hunt.  Miss Tyson is survived by her nieces, Jane Hunt Worley (Samuel) of Raleigh; Joanna Hunt Davis (Joseph) and her great-niece Maggie Davis Johnson (Zach).  Her kindness, intelligence and gentle nature made her very popular among her friends, family and the staff at Penick Village.  She will be greatly missed.

The family would like to thank the staff at Penick Village and First Health Hospice for their faithful and tender care of Miss Tyson.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 21, 2025, at First Presbyterian Church in Carthage Cemetery with The Reverend Rick T. Martindale officiating.

  1. Visiting Miss Tyson in the Penick Home was enjoyable. She was an interesting lady, and we enjoyed our conversations about Carthage in
days past and current happenings in town. Remembering days in her Mother’s classroom would bring a smile to her. With sympathy and prayers to her nieces.
