I remember Sam from school. He always had that big smile on his face and was a friend to anyone that he met. Prayers for peace and comfort to the family during this time of loss.

I met Sam at lenoir community college. When I say everyone on that team became more than teammates, we were more like brothers. Sam had a great personality, great heart and just an all around good person. We may not have spoke everyday, but I’ve never forgotten any of my brothers on that team. My most sincerest condolences and prayers go out to the Wilburn family.
God bless you all. Betty and I will attend the funeral.

Want to send love, prayers, and comfort to all loved ones from Sam’s Garner Road basketball family. Genuinely one of the best people i ever had the pleasure of calling a teammate.
Absolute condolences to the family. Ill share a story that demonstrates what a great person Sam was and a story only a handful of people got to experience, and even less remember. I was teaching at UPHS and helping Coach Purvis doing some scouting and other things with the basketball team. I went to home games and some practices and was a small part of the team. I got to meet Sam and interact with him, always an exemplary player, kid, student, and person. A moment Ill never forget, especially in this era – happened with Sam. The Vikings had battled someone on the court, and came back and were down a bucket. Coach Purvis draws up a play for Sam, and of course Sam hits the shot at the buzzer for a amazing win. The kids and crowd are going crazy as we make our way back to our meeting room. Everyone is celebrating and Coach Purvis addresses the team, and celebrates the win. Sam is asked to say something to the team. He stands up and instead of taking credit for the win and celebrating himself, he points out the teams heart and effort, and emphasizes the screen one of his teammates set to get him open for the shot. Such a selfless moment in a world of me first moments.
Our prayers and thoughts are with the family at this difficult time. May God’s love and peace surround you.
