Shirley Hussey Bruce 68, passed away Thursday, March 9, 2017, at her home, surrounded by her family. She has now courageously won her victory over ovarian cancer after a gracious and valiant 2 ½ year battle.  

Funeral Service will be 2:00 PM, Monday, March 13, 2017 at Smyrna United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Reverend David Woodhouse officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.   

Shirley was a native of Moore County and a member of the first graduating class of North Moore High School in 1966.  She just celebrated the 50th Anniversary with many of her classmates.   She worked at Westmoore Elementary School as a Bookkeeper/Secretary for 22 years and at North Moore High school for 10 years as Administrative Assistant. She was faithful to her church serving as Children's Sunday School teacher for 38 years, church secretary for 15 years, a member of the church choir, the Concert choir and teacher for Vacation Bible School.  Shirley loved young people and treated each one as her very own.  She loved cooking, canning, gardening  and taking beach trips with her family.  Her greatest pleasure came from spending time with her family especially time with her 4 grandchildren.   She was a very faithful Christian woman, professional, hardworking and always going above and beyond. She cared for many relatives and special friends over the years.  Shirley was a daughter of the late Pelly and Lydia Jane Sheffield Hussey; and was preceded in death by brother: Farrell Hussey, brother-in-law: Lloyd Burns.

Shirley is survived by husband of 50 years, Jessie “Buddy”; daughters:  Donna Brewster and Patton, of Robbins, Dawn Priest and husband Michael, of Seagrove; grandchildren: Morgan Brewster, Jessie, Lydia, Hallie Ann Priest; sisters: Aileen Burns, Flora Maness and husband Mike; brother: Tom Hussey and wife Sharon, nieces, nephews, many cousins and friends. She is also survived by her black lab, Molly.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM on Sunday, March 12, 2017 at Kennedy Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Michael and Dawn Priest, 5579 Waddells Ferry Road, Seagrove, NC.
