Shirley Sessoms Evers passed away Saturday, March 14, 2026.
Shirley is the daughter of the late Otis and Margaret Milligan Sessoms, born on October 24, 1940.
Shirley chose education as her formal career. Graduating from St Andrews Presbyterian College and later earning her Masters Degree from Fayetteville State University. Shirley taught for 35 years with 25 years being at Westmoore Elementary School.
She had a great passion for counted cross stitch and the family will cherish all of her beautiful pieces. After her husband passed she started quilting and she truly enjoyed it. She was very proud of her beautiful quilts.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband James Richard Evers Sr, her son James Richard Evers Jr,and her brother Jerry Sessoms.
Shirley leaves behind her daughter Melissa Evers Oakley(Ronnie), brother Stephen Craig Sessoms (Vanessa) and her grandchildren who she loved dearly, Robert James Oakley, Stephen Craig Oakley, Emma Louise Oakley, Kaitlyn Melissa Evers and Nathaniel James Evers.
Graveside service will be 2 PM, Saturday, March 21, 2026 at Pine Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service at Kennedy Funeral Home beginning at Noon.

Mrs. Evers was my 7th and 8th grade teacher. I learned so much from her. I will never forget her. Her husband was at North Moore when I started there and was very nice to me. Great folks. May they both rest in peace.

Kim and I are grieved for you all in your loss of Mrs. Evers. A person of integrity with strong convictions. I admired that about her. She was always an encouraging friend to me . She will be remembered as a great educator and fondly held in high esteem by her many students and colleagues. She was very devoted to family and friends. She will be missed. My cousin, Shirley, was a beautiful person. She had a beautiful spirit . . . was loving, caring, had a wonderful sense of humor and was a blessing to know. She was dedicated to her family, to thousands of middle schoolers through the years and to her many friends. Shirley was an amazing educator and taught with integrity and purpose for 35 years. She also had a strong faith. As a younger member of the extended family, I always looked up to her and I thank God now for her life. My heart goes out to Melissa and her family as they grieve. She will be greatly missed, but, we have the memories which will stay with us forever. Love and prayers to Melissa and the family as you go through these difficult times. “Sorrow is a fleeting emotion, but love is infinite.”
