Signe Torberg Hibberd, age 101 died Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at St. Joseph of the Pines in Southern Pines.

 

Born in Worcester, MA on April 18, 1915 she was the daughter of the late  Einer and Ellen Torberg and had lived in Southern Pines since 1981. She was married to Charles Perry Hibberd in 1942, and until his death in 2004. He was a naval officer, aviator and Pearl Harbor survivor who was awarded a Silver Star for his role in the battle of Midway. Together they lived in the Hartford area of Connecticut where Signe worked in advertising and later real estate. She taught art, textiles and sewing and always had a number of art projects in process.

 

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother Herbert and her daughter Jenellen.

 

She is survived by her grandson Joseph Charles Young, her son in law David Young and several nieces and nephews.

 

In the spring her ashes will be with placed with those of her husband in a niche next to her daughters niche at Pinelawn Memorial Park's Garden of Peace in Southern Pines.

 

She and the family are appreciative of the many kindnesses extended to her by staff of the Coventry at Belle Meade.
