January 18, 1959 ~ December 28, 2022
On Wednesday morning, December 28, 2022, Vernon O’Neil LeGrand, age 63, ended his earthly journey. He passed away at UNC Burn Center in Chapel Hill.
Vernon was born January 18, 1959, to Alvin Louie LeGrand and Pauline Brown LeGrand. He was the grandson of the late Jim and Katie Brown of Eagle Springs, and the late Louie and Bonnie LeGrand of Columbia, SC.
He graduated with the Class of 1977 of North Moore High School in Robbins. In 1978, Vernon married his high school sweetheart, Joanna Dunlap LeGrand. They started a family and continued living in Moore County. They had two daughters Ashley and Corey Brooke.
Vernon is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and their daughter Ashley Elizabeth LeGrand. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Joanna, his daughter Corey LeGrand Shepard and her husband Caleb Shepard, and his 10 year old grandson Levi Benson Shepard, of Star. His surviving uncles are Horace LeGrand, Leland LeGrand and Lavern LeGrand, who are very special to him.
For many years, Vernon and his “Pops” worked side-by-side in their family business, as plumber and HVAC contractors in Moore County. He made many friends along the way. Vernon had a deep heart of sharing what he had and was loved by many, young and old.
Vernon recently retired and enjoyed being free to spend time with his “Little Buddy” grandson and to take care of his farm animals, pets, and work in his annual vegetable garden. He loved Bluegrass music and always had the best time being the amateur harmonica player, and guitar & banjo picker alongside his musician friends. All who knew and loved Vernon, were drawn to him in some unique way. He loved to share the experiences of his childhood and high school years – all the while, gaining laughter and interaction from friends and family. Vernon loved to camp, fish, hunt and be on the water any time he could. His love for children was mesmerizing – especially for those who affectionately called him Uncle Vern!
