Virginia Dowd, age 90 of Carthage died Thursday (April 20, 2017) at FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 am Monday at Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Reggie Cruse.
A native of Moore County she was a daughter of the late Walter and Ida Hannon Dowd. Virginia was a caretaker all of her life. She worked as a registered nurse for 20 years at Rex Hospital in Raleigh and later for 22 years at Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst. She was also an avid Duke fan and rarely missed watching a game.
She is survived by a sister Cary Dowd Cruse of White Rock, SC; a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and three special great-great-nieces Rebekah, Serina and Samaree.
The family will receive friends at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home on Sunday from 6:00 - 8:00 PM.

One of the most admirable and influential nurses I’ve had the pleasure to work with. A very kind, sweet lady. Heaven has gained an angel. Prayers for the family.
I worked with Virginia in the 1970’s and early 1980’s.she was a wonderful mentor and team worker. One of the best nurses I knew.
Ms. Dowd was working in the nursery when I had our son Jason in 1979. She was such a pleasure to talk to and always made you feel like your baby was the most beautiful baby in the hospital. She was very encouraging to me as a new mother and I so apprecate
