William C. Bateman, 85, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 5, 2012. He was predeceased by his wife, Gloria Bateman; father, Lawrence M. Bateman; mother, Grace D. Bateman; and sisters; Martha Beebe, Anne Buhler, and Janet Bateman.
Bill is survived by his sons; William C. Bateman (Joanna) from Essex, NY, Lawrence C. Bateman of Whispering Pines, NC and David W. Bateman (Lisa) of Shawnee, KS, one daughter; Sharon L. Taylor of Rome, IN, ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren, one brother; Charles Bateman, two sisters; Margaret Cook and Helen Rice and his many friends he made through the years.
Bill was born December 13, 1926 in Mexico, NY. He served in the US Navy as an electrician's mate on the USS Minnesota in the Pacific Fleet during World War II. He graduated from Clarkson College of Technology with a degree in engineering. Bill was a professional electrical engineer and former partner of BEC Electric Company, Inc. from 1958 to 1980. He was active in the Syracuse community as a member of the Optimist Club.
Bill and Gloria moved to Hilton Head Island, SC in 1980 where he worked as a consulting electrical engineer. He was also a Board Member of the Palmetto Electric Cooperative and an active member of the Rotary Club. In 1993 they retired to Whispering Pines, NC. Bill was a member of the Whispering Pines Town Council.
Powell Funeral Home & Crematory in Southern Pines is assisting the Bateman family.
