William H. “Bill” Mackey III, 55, passed away Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at his home.

 

Celebration of Life service will  be 2:00 PM Saturday, November 28, 2020 at River Pines Event Center, 2555 Farmlife School Road, Carthage, NC.  Please consider COVID 19 guidelines in attending this service.

 

Bill was born in Colombia, SC and moved to Carthage with his family  in 1972,  He was a graduate of Union Pines High school where he played football.  He then attended Appalachian State University, receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice.   Bill served his community first as a Probation/Parole Officer with the North Carolina Department of Correction and then as a Deputy with the Moore County Sheriff’s Department, where he retired as a Captain in the Investigations Division.  He was always grateful to the men and women who served with him for always having his back so that all could go home safely.  Bill loved his family very much and when you became a friend to Bill, you became his family.   He was not only a big presence in the room, he never met a stranger, his laugh and smile were contagious.  Bill loved being outdoors, hunting, fishing, just anything outside.   He also liked traveling and visiting family.  Bill loved Carthage and like his mother, enjoyed serving our community. Bill was preceded in death by parents: William Hoyt Mackey, Jr. and Billie Moore Mackey; grandmother; Gladys Cole Moore.

 

Bill is survived by his loving wife, Lisa; sons: Cole Mackey, John Garrison and wife Chelsea; grandson: Logan Garrison; brother: Chris Mackey and wife, Rhonda; niece and nephews: Tristin, Ian, Lily, Wyatt, Jake, Ethan, Nathan, Jacob, Dustin.

  1. We’re so very sorry to hear of Bill’s passing. He was always smiling and creating a bright light in this world. He will be missed by so many who had the privilege of knowing him. Prayers for his family, his work family and all the friends who will miss him!

  8. I first met Bill as when he came on carthage fire dept as a jr fireman i think he was 16,I helped train him,he rode with me many times on tanker. And he spend his life doing service to help his fellow man. I am so sorry to hear of his life being cut short (RIP BILL)

  15. I had the privilege to work with Bill at the Moore County Sheriff’s Office. He was not only a great Law Enforcement Officer but he was a great person who loved his job and the people who worked with him or for him. He also cared about the people he served in Moore County. He was not only Big Man but a Big Man with a Big Heart. Bill was not only a great coworker but a great friend, great husband and father. Bill you will be missed. Prayers go out to the family.

He loved you all and was especially proud of Cole and Cole’s accomplishments. Bill did an outstanding job at the Sheriff’s Office investigating major crimes, providing leadership to our investigators and mentoring our young deputies. Bill was a true friend.

Cole your Dad did what a dad is tasked to do…he taught you to be a man as well as a gentleman and he did an outstanding job…for you are without a doubt. He was so proud of your . “pinning” as a NAVY Seal. You have your Dad’s heart for serving others in a protective way. Godspeed and stay safe in your duties.
