March 2, 1935 ~ September 1, 2026

Born in: Charlotte, North Carolina
Resided in: Vass, North Carolina

Worth Eugene Collins, age 91, of Vass, peacefully passed away while holding his daughter’s hand on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. Gene went home to be with his loving wife, Lena Mae, whom he loved for 70 years.

A native of Charlotte, he was the son of the late Worth & Lena Chaffin Collins.

Gene proudly served in the Charlotte Fire Department and in the U.S. Army. After his service, he worked as a Weapons Inspector with Civil Service for 47 years.

He is remembered by his family as the strongest, hardest-working, dedicated family man they knew. Gene was the kind of man you only hear about in stories, but we were lucky enough to have him in our lives. Honest, a good neighbor, a proud Army veteran, a soft-spoken man with endless stories to share, a jack of all trades who could fix a car or build a house—he literally knew how to fix everything and would be the first to come help anyone in need. He loved us all and taught us all the best lessons in life by leading by example.

Gene is preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife Lena, of 69 years, and his son-in-law, Jim Martin.

He is survived by his two daughters, Donna Martin and Janet Collins, both of Vass; his grandchildren, Christi (Mike) Burns, Faith (Kyle) Clark, Michelle Gagnon, and Robert Gagnon; his great-grandchildren: Sean Happnie-Burns, Britani Burns (Walker Cohen), Gena Clark, Michael (Lily) Burns, Jaxson Clark, and Angel Burns; his great-great-grandson, Bryce Cohen; and his sisters-in-law, Wilma and Irene Johnson.

A memorial graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, September 14, 2026, at Cypress Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Cameron.  Rev. Corrina Gambrell will be officiating.

“We are going to miss him dearly, but take comfort in his faith in Jesus Christ, knowing he is in Heaven and telling his stories to the angels now. There will never be another like him.”
