The Rev. Ernest L. Johnson, Jr. US Marine Corps Retired, age 86, died January 22, 2025, at home in Wilmington, NC.

Born in High Point, NC, and raised in Durham, NC, he was the son of the late Ernest L. Johnson, Sr. and Mary Josephine Moore Johnson. He was medically retired from the US Marine Corps in 1968. He was a graduate of Northern High School in Durham, NC, University of North Carolina at Wilmington and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Ed pastored churches in Jacksonville, Cape Carteret, Kenansville, Carthage, Durham and Fairmont, all in North Carolina, as well as Dallas, Pennsylvania, King William and Charles City, Virginia.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will begin at 10 AM and service will begin at 11 AM with graveside service with full military honors to follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Durham, NC.

Ed is preceded in death by son, John Worth, wife, Linda Hall Johnson, two sisters, Ruth and Josephine, brother, John, sister-in-law, Gail, brothers-in-law, Ralph, Dexter, Buddy, Ray and Bill. He is survived by his children, Ernest L. “Eddie” Johnson, III, wife Sita, of Jacksonville, NC, Rev. John W. Johnson, wife Jen, of Concord, NC, and Patricia J. Morton, husband Steven, of Wilmington, NC, and Joseph Liriano of Greensboro, NC. Beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Holli, Neil, Anjali, Hannah, Jack, Walt, Naomi, Becca, Chase, Katie. Bex, and Arion. Beloved sisters-in-law: Delinda and Sandy. Beloved nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Baptist Children’s Home of North Carolina, P. O. Box 338, Thomasville, NC 27361.
